Navigating Your Dog's Return What to Expect After Boarding

Leaving your dog for boarding entails various expectations upon their return. As they come back home, you may notice a brief adjustment period as they readjust to their familiar surroundings. This transitional phase is entirely normal and nothing to fret about. Did you know that 95% of dogs return home from boarding without significant behavioral changes? While the vast majority of furry companions seamlessly transition back into their routines, about 5% may exhibit alterations in behavior or physical well-being. Whether your dog falls into the majority or experiences adjustments, understanding what to anticipate upon their return is crucial for a seamless transition. Here's a comprehensive guide outlining potential changes and how to navigate them effectively:

Potential Changes in Eating Habits Upon returning home, some dogs may exhibit an increased appetite due to heightened activity levels during their stay. Conversely, others may catch up on meals if they refrained from eating adequately while away.

Increased Thirst Your dog may display a higher water intake upon returning home, either due to a preference for familiar water sources or newfound comfort in their home environment. It's ideal not to offer water for the first 2-4 hours after returning home, as immediate intake can lead to stomach discomfort. If you believe your dog is thirsty during this time, offering ice cubes can provide hydration without the risk of overconsumption.

Heightened Sleepiness A well-cared-for dog returning from boarding may exhibit signs of fatigue, indicating active engagement during their stay. Encourage healthy sleeping patterns by engaging them in moderate activity and ensuring ample rest.

Potential Anxiety It's important to note that some dogs may experience anxiety upon returning home from boarding, stemming from unfamiliar surroundings or separation from their owners. Signs may include pacing, excessive panting, whining, or withdrawal. Provide reassurance and a calm environment to support their transition.

Upset Stomach Dogs, like humans, can experience upset stomachs triggered by fear, excitement, or anxiety. If your dog develops an upset stomach after boarding, it could be attributed to emotional stressors. Monitor their condition, and if symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, consult a veterinarian.

Understanding these potential changes will enable you to guide your dog effectively through their transition back home, ensuring a comfortable adjustment period. Remember, if you observe any changes not listed above, don't hesitate to reach out to us for guidance. Your dog's well-being is our priority.
